We were hungry but didn’t know where to go. We’d just run an errand or two but some of the restaurants we wanted to try were still closed. After stopping by our friends’ place in Midtown, we went around the corner to South City Kitchen. I shot a Mother’s Day brunch there many years ago but didn’t eat (don’t mix work with play) so I was curious to finally try the cuisine.
What I ate: I wanted breakfast. Though I was slightly overwhelmed with the options available to me, I ordered the South City Breakfast — eggs, grits, and bacon. In hindsight, I hate that I played this so safely but I knew I couldn’t go wrong with the standard breakfast plate. The grits were creamy and the eggs were soft and fluffy. The bacon reminded me of turkey bacon which wasn’t bad but I prefer crunchy bacon.
Ed ordered the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake which is crab cake under an over-easy egg and over potato hash. He couldn’t finish this plate, which is rare for him. He enjoyed it nevertheless.
We also ordered Fried Green Tomatoes and ate the SCK bread while we waited for our entrees to come out.
What I’d order the next time: Depending on the next time I go, I might try the She Crab Soup, Wheatberry Salad, Malted Buttermilk Waffle, or any of the lunch plates. The variety is pleasant.
What all can you order? The menu might have a few seasonal options, but it’s quintessentially Southern. There are barbecue-esque plates and dishes where seafood is the main protein. You have a variety of salads, entrees, appetizers and desserts to choose from.
Overall food price range: Brunch entrees range from $8-21, depending on your appetite.
What I drank: I ordered a pineapple rummy drink. I don’t believe it was on the menu. Ed ordered an Old Fashioned.
What I’d drink next time: I’d order a Country Thyme Lemonade or Purple Rain, Purple Rain if I were in a cocktail mood. Otherwise, water with lemon would suffice.
What are other drinks you can order? They have standard brunch cocktails, but any drink can be made at the full bar downstairs.
Overall drink price range: The standard brunch cocktails range from $8-12 a glass.
Describe the vibe: This place is a house fashioned into a restaurant. Very standard motif for a Southern-style restaurant. There are a lot of windows that let in a lot of great natural light. The tables are packed a little tightly so you can get easily acquainted with your neighbors.
Does the restaurant have any outdoor seating? Not that I remember.
Area: South City Kitchen Midtown is located off Crescent Avenue, next to Flip Flops and across the street from Opera.
Brunch time: Brunch is on the weekends between the hours of 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.
So, how was brunch at South City Kitchen Midtown?
Cool, cool, cool. Our waiter was attentive and pleasant. The food and drinks came out in a timely manner. The food was warm and delicious. It doesn’t take much to please me so I’d def return.
